Plant material and extract testing
We help makers of herbal teas and supplements check whether plant material matches its stated identity and whether another plant has been substituted.

When testing is useful
A supplier's documents may not be enough to assess a specific batch of plant material or extract. Analysis can help when choosing a supplier, checking a new extract and monitoring batches regularly.
What we can find out
- Whether the sample's chemical profile is consistent with the plant or extract stated by the supplier.
- How similar different batches of material are.
- Whether the extract contains unusual or unexpected components that need further explanation.
How we perform the analysis
We obtain a chromatographic profile of the sample. Depending on its composition, we use gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) or liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). We compare it with available profiles and agreed reference samples.
Whether we can confirm the exact botanical species depends on the sample, available reference materials and the agreed analytical approach.
